Application FAQ

Q: Do I have to apply via campo?

A: Yes, please register an FAU-IdM account first and submit your application via the campo portal.

Q: Can I apply for admission in the summer/winter term?

A: Yes, admission is possible starting both in the summer and in the winter.

Q: I want to apply, but the program is not showing in the list of subjects in campo. What’s wrong?

A: If you are applying early, the program might not be listed because the application period has not started yet. Please consult this webpage for details on the application periods.

Q: Do I have to send hard copies of my documents?

A: No, we do not require hard copies of your documents at any point during this process.

Q: Can I check the status of my application?

A: No, we review all applications in batches and there is no other “status” to be checked. If your application was evaluated, you will be notified.

Q: Can I apply with any Bachelor’s degree?

A: Your qualifying degree has to be in computer science, in a closely related subject, or in mathematics.

Q: Is there a certain grade (“Numerus Clausus”) I have to reach to be admitted?

A: No, there is no admission restriction by grade alone.

Q: What are the language requirements for this program?

A: You will have to present official confirmation that your English proficiency is at least B2 on the CEFR scale or equivalent. Most students take an IETLS or TOEFL test for this. Please note that self-evaluation with language learning apps like DuoLingo will not be accepted.

Q: I have been admitted for winter/summer term 20(XY), can I defer my admission to the following winter/summer term?

A: No, your admission is only valid for that particular semester. There is a high probability for re-admission in the following year, but you will have to re-apply (please make sure to include your previous admission letter in the following application!).

Q: I have not been admitted into the program, can I still get admission if anyone else does not claim their spot in the program?

A: No, all decisions are final and binding, we do not rank applications and there is no fixed number of spots in the program. This means that if you have not been admitted there is no way for re-evaluation of the application.

Q: I have not been admitted into the program, can I apply again in the future?

A: Yes, you may re-apply as often as you’d like, even after rejection. However, please keep in mind that if your qualification profile does not improve significantly, you will likely get the same result. This is not a game of chance and probabilities.

Q: I got a message that I was not admitted. Can I get a list of reasons why?

A: No, we do not give out details on why any individual person was not admitted, on principle. There are no exceptions.

Q: If I am accepted, do I need to move to Germany or can I attend classes remotely?

A: You will need to move to Germany, FAU is an in-person university. Lectures may or may not be available online, exercise lessons almost never are, and exams are always in-person.

Q: I am planning my move to Germany. Will accommodation be provided?

A: No. You will have find a place to live yourself. FAU has some helpful information on where to get started. There is also a limited supply of student housing that you can apply to.

Q: Who can I contact if I have any other questions?

A: Please address all other questions to the study advisor AI.
